Evaluation of Book

“Like the sun, I’m here to shine,” begins this lovely picture book with beautiful illustrations about the worth of one adorable little girl. Through the use of similes the author compares the little girl to things like the sun and the rain. The sentiment of the story is charming and ends with the line, “I am enough.” Reminding the reader of their own self-worth.

The illustrations are lovely and really bring the book to a new level. The soft acrylic paint colors used add to the positive and uplifting message of the book. While the digital chalk backgrounds provide an element of texture that provide another dimension to the illustrations.

The focal point of the illustrations is on the main character. The illustrator uses lots of white space to make the main character the focus of each page. The text is also separate from the illustrations. All of these visual elements compliment the story.

Diversity of females is represented in the illustrations of this book. A girl in a wheel chair, one wearing glasses and another wearing a head scarf are all included. However, there are only females represented in the book which is disappointing. The book says that it’s for all readers but I’m certain boys will question why they aren’t represented in the message.

Response

I believe that there are many readers who don’t believe that they are enough or that they are worthy. Because of this, I loved the title and overall message of this book. However, I was disappointed to find that only girls were represented within the story. I believe this is also a message that boys need to know is true for them as well.

Conclusion

This picture book with beautiful illustrations uses one little girl to spread the messages of loving yourself, respecting others and being kind. Despite its lack of male characters, I believe it will be enjoyed by all readers. I recommend reading it.
