Biography
Evaluation of Book
Famous for her role in the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman’s role in the movement to abolish slavery is the focus of this book titled I Am Harriet Tubman by Brad Meltzer. This biography is part of a popular series that focuses on individuals with the characteristic traits of a hero. With illustrations by Christopher Eliopoulos this series is geared towards younger readers with an interest in famous individuals in history.

Meltzer tells the story of Harriet Tubman’s life in a manner that is easy enough for young readers to understand. In addition to the storyline the characters in the story converse through speech bubbles giving it almost the appeal of a graphic novel.
At the back of the book there are photos and a timeline to provide additional information for the reader. This educational tools are important in nonfiction books. Personally, I found it interesting that Eliopoulos never changed Tubman’s character in the story. She looks like a child throughout the story from her early life until her old age. It’s an interesting artistic choice that I’m not sure I understand and doesn’t match the text of the story.
Response
I purchased this series for the school library at the request of a kindergarten teacher looking for simpler text to share biographical information with students. I couldn’t keep them on the shelves long enough for the teachers to take a look. The students loved them and I had to limit them to only checking out one at a time. The colorful illustrations and easy phrasing made these educational books very popular with second and third graders.
I believe that readers love non-fiction and this biography is an excellent example. I love the message that Meltzer shares through Tubman’s life story. The message of making the right choices even when it’s hard is a lesson that I believe every reader needs to hear.
Conclusion
As part of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman was always following the North Star. For slaves like Harriet it was the way to freedom. For readers today Meltzer says to follow our hearts – our North Star, help others and do the right thing. Because all readers need to hear the message of heroes, this book comes highly recommended.
