The Great Ice Age by Geronimo Stilton
Graphic Novel
Evaluation of Book
Readers love graphic novels with their combination of text and visual content. They are desired by readers with short attention spans and they have become one of the most popular areas of the school library. The Great Ice Age by Geronimo Stilton tells the story of when Geronimo has to travel to the Ice Age to stop the Pirate Cats from capturing the Giant Wooly Mammoth and changing the course of history.
Through research I learned that Geronimo Stilton is an Italian children’s book series that was the brain child of Elisabetta Dami. The main character, Geronimo, is a mouse from New Mouse City on Mouse Island. Geronimo uses his wit to stop the villains in the story. Stilton uses bits of history to explain about Neanderthals and saber tooth tigers which is was informative but didn’t prevent take away from the story line.
The cartoon like style used by Stilton are ideal for the age group targeted. The bright colors attract the reader and visually support the story. It’s like a television cartoon that’s been written as a book which is part of the great appeal to young readers.
Response
In my opinion graphic novels are almost too visually stimulating. They pages are chopped up into little rectangles with speech bubbles and bright colors everywhere which makes my eyes hurt. So although I am not a huge fan of graphic novels, I do see the need for them as they appeal to students who are not as fond of reading. I enjoy the Geronimo Stilton adventures particularly because they are an easy transition into chapter books for readers. I have also found that the Geronimo Stilton series has been turned into a television series. I have used parts of these episodes to introduce students to the novels. They love that the books feel like a cartoon.
Conclusion
The Great Ice Age is a humorous and pleasant read. The adventures shared in the story will get readers coming back for more. It is a series worth reading for individuals who prefer a visual reading experience and one that I recommend.
